Manchester City are looking to go into the international break on the back of a much-needed win, but face a fearless Leeds side at Elland Road this afternoon.

City have won one and lost one of their opening two Premier League fixtures, with the defeat to Leicester last weekend exposing their injury problems and defensive weaknesses. Since then, though, Pep Guardiola has been boosted by the return of Aymeric Laporte and the record signing of Ruben Dias.

The win at Burnley in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday saw City return to winning ways, with Raheem Sterling and Ferran Torres both scoring. The likes of Phil Foden, Nathan Ake, Kevin de Bruyne and Kyle Walker all got at least some rest in that midweek game, which also saw Bernardo Silva return from injury.

The game also sees Guardiola come up against Marcelo Bielsa, who he described as the person in football he has the most respect for in his pre-match press conference.

Fernandinho on becoming City captain

The Brazilian has been speaking about being voted new City captain.

He said:

“It feels good. For me, personally, it's a big honour, I'm so proud. Since I came here, I had lots of respect from everyone, so now I become the captain. It's good, I try to put everything in place, especially off the pitch. Because what we do off the pitch obviously affects what happens on the pitch as well, so that's the way I think.

"It's good, they know me very well and when you have someone you can trust, you can put some more effort in training sessions and in the game because, at the end of the day, we are here for one purpose and we all go together in the same direction.

"I think the captain never works alone so you have extra help as well, but for sure we have guys who can manage some situations as well, teammates that have been at the club for a long time and they know exactly how this team runs and how the club works, such as Kun Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan.

"All of them could be captains, you know their mentality, they are a bit older as well and they understand much better the team and the club than when they arrived five or six years ago.”

City take the lead!

The youngsters get their reward for all that pressure in the first half.

Tai Sodje continues his good form with a goal from the spot.

A season where penalties will be crucial

City’s coaching staff should probably stick the highlights of the Chelsea game on for the players on the trip to Leeds, with another two penalties given in what is feeling like a season that will feature spotkicks as a regular talking point.

City players gave away three daft ones against Leicester and Sean Dyche reckoned they should have given away two against Burnley. If you get into those positions, you leave yourself vulnerable whether you’re City, Palace or anybody.

Half time in the derby

It's been City's half, but no goals yet.

Pre-match selection hints?

The club website declared Guardiola’s comments about Ruben Dias in his press conference yesterday as a hint that he could start after the manager spoke of how quickly his new signing had settled in a few training sessions.

There could be another hint of another defender’s involvement today: John Stones has posted a preview picture on Instagram for today’s game, having not been fit enough to play in the last three games.

Predicted team - Dias starts on bench

For the first time this season, Pep Guardiola could have all of his centre-back options fit to choose from when Manchester City take on Leeds United.

The question is, will new signing Ruben Dias be ready to slot straight into Guardiola's starting XI for the first Premier League clash at Elland Road for City since 2004.

Dias will have trained three times before Saturday's clash with Marcelo Bielsa's fearless side, and will no doubt be fit enough to play after a full pre-season with Benfica. Guardiola said he and his coaching staff will decide on whether to throw Dias straight in at Leeds, with arguments for and against.

He would surely improve a defence that shipped five goals in the last league game, but playing at centre-back under Guardiola is not a position you can master with three training sessions.

So instead, it might be wiser to stick with Aymeric Laporte after he came through the Burnley game, and partner him with Nathan Ake, who came off the bench at Turf Moor.

Biggest match of the season so far

This is comfortably City’s biggest match of the season so far as it will determine the mood around the club for the final days of the transfer window and the next two weeks.

City have an excellent win and a disastrous defeat from their opening two games, and the fact that the win came first means they are in a more perilous position with the Leicester game still fresh in heads.

Three points today and that match will be easier to get over, but anything but and there will be (more) serious questions about the team’s credentials for the next fortnight.
