The Borussia Dortmund winger was top of Man Utd's transfer priorities all summer but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side did not sign him.

Manchester United will keep Jadon Sancho on their transfer shortlist despite missing out on his signature in the summer window.

United were reluctant to meet Borussia Dortmund's €120million asking price for the England winger and sounded out other options on loan to fill the right-wing position, which had been identified as a priority for the summer.

They wanted to negotiate a cheaper price for Sancho amid concerns over paying such an inflated fee in the current financial climate. But Dortmund stood firm, insisting that Sancho would stay and stayed true to their word — although United are expected to launch another attempt to sign the player next summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a major admirer of Sancho, with the 20-year-old a perfect fit for the club's policy of signing young, talented players hungry for success.

Deadline day saw United attempt to sign Ousmane Dembele and Ismaila Sarr on loan, though MEN Sport understands United considered alternative options to Sancho for a number of weeks before.

The club looked at options to buy and loan, but only wanted to bring in high-quality and motivated players who would improve the squad and fit the culture under Solskjaer, as they believe Sancho would..

In the end, the only wide players United were able to recruit in the summer window were 18-year-olds Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo. Pellistri, who arrives from Uruguayan club Penarol, is highly rated in South America and could play a part in the first-team squad this season; while Diallo will join United from Atalanta in January. The pair cost a combined €30million plus some considerable add-ons but are viewed as hot prospects for the future.

United are firmly of the belief that Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani, Daniel James, Odion Ighalo and Pellistri give them enough variety in attacking positions until January at least. Despite the opportunistic signings of Cavani and Ighalo late in the past two transfer windows, United's transfer strategy remains to blend high-quality signings with a strong core of homegrown talent playing exciting, attacking footbal.

United could revive their interest in Sancho in January, though there is a feeling that Dortmund will not sell mid-season.

The 2021 summer window could see a number of other Premier League clubs enter the race for Sancho, however, given the understanding that the England international is keen to return to his homeland at some stage. He will then have two years remaining on his contract in Germany.

Ighalo is expected to depart United in January, with the addition of Cavani spelling the beginning of the end for the on-loan Nigerian. Ighalo will return to his parent club Shanghai Shenhua. Diallo should then join up with United, after his Atalanta departure was delayed due to work permit and visa issues.

  1. Sancho would play a major role, buh if he comes in to Man-U, Ole has to change the team's formation from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3..
