Jadon Sancho has been Man Utd's top transfer target for most of the summer though time is now ticking until the deadline.

It has been a hugely infuriating summer for Manchester United, though that feeling has mainly been channelled through their fans.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted in a recent press conference that he was content with his squad but that believed his previous stance on trying to strengthen the squad. United are now running out of time to land key targets like Jadon Sancho and Alex Telles, though they ought to be able to complete some business, including one or two outgoings.

It might not be the dream window many fans had been hoping for, though Solskjaer will hope many of his squad improve by virtue of the tweaks he has made (and the ones he hasn't)

Here are six current United players who could benefit from the transfers United are likely to make before the October 5th deadline:

Mason Greenwood

Numerous claims have been made over United's pursuit of Sancho, most of them coming from Borussia Dortmund pillars of power insisting he will not be sold. Yet many former United players in the media have claimed that Sancho should not be a priority, given Mason Greenwood's development on the right-wing in the past year or so.

It appears United still want a right-winger, even if it's not Sancho, hence their interest in Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele. But if the deal for the Frenchman is just a loan, it should not impinge Greenwood's development like the permanent addition of Sancho would.

Greenwood has just turned 19 but is already a well-deserved first team player. The competition of another right-winger is a wise move, given Greenwood can play both there or centrally, but the homegrown academy star must be allowed to continue his stunning rise.

Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi

Chris Smalling's permanent exit to Roma and the fact United are not likely to sign a new centre-back this summer, having invested heavily in Harry Maguire a year ago, has prompted concern from many.

Former United star Dimitar Berbatov has been among those calling for a major central defensive addition, while Rio Ferdinand has named RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano as the ideal target. Yet United's stance is understandable, having seen some improvement from Maguire and Victor Lindelof as a pairing last season.

But with Lindelof beginning the season in shaky fashion, it may not be long before a quicker and more physical centre-back is called upon. Axel Tuanzebe is probably the fastest centre-back at the club and, if he can stay fit, is a huge prospect. Bailly has had similar fitness problems but is a natural defender and arguably a better option than Lindelof already. Both need to step up.

If not, there is Teden Mengi, the highly-rated 18-year-old central defender who could be another to bolster the first team this season. Mengi has belied his years with some excellent performances in the Under-23s in the past 12 months and, having had a taste of first team football.

Even if United complete the deal for Telles from Porto, there is a sense that Williams could thrive. Let's not forget he has played the majority of his football at Old Trafford on the 'wrong' side, being forced to cut in on his right-foot rather than probe on the outside like a naturally left-footed player.

Diogo Dalot's loan move to AC Milan opens up a spot behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the club's second choice right-back. It may be a role for Williams to relish, ideal for his development to continue and to make himself a more attacking alternative to the former Crystal Palace star.

Solskjaer is a fan of Williams, so even if a new left-back is acquired, it is unlikely that the Harpurhey-born academy product will be ditched.

But if he's not considered for the reserve role on the right of defence, 19-year-old Ethan Laird may grab it with both hands. United may have been criticised for a lack of transfer activity, but their promotion of academy stars is commendable. We could see more of that this season, depending on what the final few days of the window have in store.

  1. About Greenwood, if Ole can convert Fred to that position too, it would be massive.
