The Man Utd youngster played in the Under-23s Manchester derby vs Man City and is impressing in the Old Trafford academy.

Manchester United coach Neil Wood believes 16-year-old Shola Shoretire is already becoming one of the best players in his Under-23s squad.

Shoretire has developed into a regular for the Under-23s, despite not celebrating his 17th birthday until February, and has scored two goals and laid on two assists this season already.

His name has been known for some time in the United junior ranks as a prodigious talent. And U23s boss Wood talked up the versatile forward after the 2-2 Manchester derby draw with City on Sunday.

"What impresses me the most is he is a very technical player," said Wood on Shoretire after the game at Leigh Sports Village.

"Shola has always played up a year through his whole academy career. I can’t remember him ever playing his own age group. He has always been stretched.

"He is very mature for his age, the way he plays, he does a lot of work, takes a lot of positions up, and he has played a lot of roles. He’s played [Number] 9, he’s played left, he’s played on the right, he’s played 10 and whatever you ask him to do – on and off the ball – he is going to do it. You can trust him to do that job.

"He is very young, and doing excellent for the age of him. I am not expecting him to be man of the match or [a] main figure of the team, because he is so young, but he’s not going on that pitch and drowning or anything. He has probably been one of our most consistent outstanding performers throughout the season."

Wood also lauded Ethan Galbraith for his development in the side, though believes the 19-year-old — who has recent signed a new contract at United — needs to hone his central midfield game

He added: "Galbraith did really well last season. I think it helped him having [James] Garner and [Dylan] Levitt around him. He's almost gone into a bit of a deeper role this season, so we're trying to get him higher up the pitch. He drops too deep and wants to play between the centre-backs when it's probably not needed.

"But he dictates the play, he's always had that, he wants to get on the ball in the right positions. I think his passing can be more dangerous, switching out to the wide areas and forcing balls through the middle which isn't quite the right option.

"There's plenty of work there for him to improve on and he's got the right attitude to do that and get better at it."
