Man Utd handed double injury boost as Solskjaer faces defender decision

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be tempted to use Sunday's clash against Leeds to rest some of his defenders after receiving a well-timed double injury boost.

The Man Utd boss admitted he may have to consider changes in his back line to ease the load on first choice centre-back pairing Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Both players have played together in all but one of United's league fixtures this season, with Maguire ever present.

"Victor and Harry have been very consistent," Solskjaer said. "I thought last season as well they were excellent. Harry played the most minutes in European football last season, and I think he’s enjoying playing.

"Victor is maturing, growing and getting more used to the demands of the Premier League. They have been very consistent but they might come to a point where they might have to rest."

Sunday's meeting at Old Trafford could be an ideal opportunity, as Solskjaer has Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe fit and available for selection again.

The defensive duo have both been nursing "small injuries" but have recovered in time for the visit of Marcelo Bielsa's side.

While Leeds have earned some notable results this season, including a 5-2 win over Newcastle in midweek, the fixture could represent the best chance for Maguire and Lindelof to sit out amid their opponents inconsistent form of late.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed out on Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani all arriving.

But their start to the season has been a mixed bag, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 thrashing by Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris at the other.

The question now is whether they can find the right balance?

The only other alternative would perhaps be the League Cup quarter final tie against Everton next week, as after Christmas United face Leicester then Wolves, followed by Aston Villa on New Years' Day.

Neither Bailly nor Tuanzebe were available for the 3-2 win over Sheffield United on Thursday, as Solskjaer had only full-back Luke Shaw on the bench as defensive cover.

Eric and Axel have had had small injuries but they’re available for us for Leeds, I hope," Solskjaer added. "Let’s see what we do."

Meanwhile, Edinson Cavani could miss the tie against Leeds due to a niggling groin injury that kept him out of United's last two matches.

"He’s very meticulous in his rehab work and has not felt right," Solskjaer said of the Uruguayan striker. "He couldn’t play this game so let’s see how he feels in the last training session."
