Manchester United have been linked with a move for Kieran Trippier, as Solskjaer assesses his options ahead of the January transfer window

When Alex Telles was signed from FC Porto on deadline day of the summer window, many felt it may have spelled the end of Luke Shaw's Manchester United career.

Whilst never disappointing in a United shirt, it is fair to argue that he has failed to live up to the lofty reputation he built up with Southampton.

Just one year after his move from the south coast, the England international suffered a horrific leg break, which saw him miss 11-months.

Since then, he has been a regular under several managers, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sanctioning a move for Telles looked like that could become a thing of the past.

However, after his performance in the Manchester derby, it's clear to see that Telles' arrival has inspired the 25-year-old to reach a new level of performance.

Solskjaer will be desperate to see that replicated on the other side of his defence, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka enduring the first lull of his Old Trafford career.

Never known for his attacking output, the £50million signing has always been rock solid defensively, even with the struggles of many of his colleagues.

But in the defeat to RB Leipzig, defensive lapses led to goals, with Angelino enjoying several opportunities up against the ex-Crystal Palace star.

With that in mind, United have been linked with a January move for a right-back with a serious dearth of options behind Solskjaer's first choice.

Kieran Trippier and Lucas Vasquez have both been touted as potential targets, with the former said to be keen to play for his boyhood club.

Diego Simeone may have something to say about that however, having played the former Tottenham man in every game of the season so far.

And with Solskjaer suggesting the January window could be a quiet one, he may need to come up with a more creative solution to his Wan-Bissaka conundrum.

Solskjaer has already shown has no issues with promoting youth and the club's U23 boss Neil Wood has been vocal in his support for exciting youngster Ethan Laird.

The 19-year-old was name-checked by Solskjaer in his first press-conference as interim boss in 2018, when he listed the talented players within the club's development system.

He has been true to his word, offering Laird regular first-team opportunities, including in his debut against Astana in the Europa League.

Following that game, the United boss suggested Laird had done himself a "good favour", but injury curtailed his development with Brandon Williams instead moving into the senior picture.

But with those issues behind him, Laird is showing the kind of attacking talent that has become so synonymous with United full backs over the years.

Speaking earlier this year, Wood highlighted the kind of qualities that Laird could bring to Solskjaer's first-team.

“I wanted to see the sort of Manchester United traits – really good possession with fast-breaking attacking, creating chances and scoring goals,” he said back in August.
