Live updates and analysis as Man Utd host fierce rivals Liverpool in the rescheduled Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Thursday night

Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways when they host fierce rivals Liverpool in the rescheduled Premier League fixture on Thursday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will play their third match in just five days as a result of the fixture pile-up caused when the May 2 match between the teams was postponed. Hundreds of fans got into Old Trafford and damaged facilities, while hundreds of protesters at The Lowry Hotel prevented the two United coaches from leaving for the stadium.

United are reviewing security measures ahead of more planned protests before the rescheduled fixture, with an anonymous fans' group calling on 10,000 fans to descend on Old Trafford before the 8.15pm kick-off.

Solskjaer is expected to make extensive changes to his line up for the match having made 10 alterations ahead of the defeat against Leicester on Tuesday night.

The calm before the storm

There’s around the same number of police and security outside the usual entrance to Old Trafford for team coaches, on John Gilbert Way, as there was on Tuesday night for the visit of Leicester City. One police van is parked up keeping an eye on proceedings and there’s plenty on foot patrol, but at the moment nothing is happening, aside from the arrival of a few journalists. As we know United’s players have already arrived at the ground and the Liverpool team coach isn’t expected yet, with Jurgen Klopp’s squad still thought to be in the centre of Manchester. It was so relaxed at the entrance on John Gilbert Way that the police officers inside the van were tucking into their sandwiches. The calm before the storm perhaps?

United increase Old Trafford security after anti-Glazer protests

United have responded to the protests against the Glazers by increasing the security around Old Trafford.

Thousands of supporters gathered before United' s clash against Liverpool at the start of the month to protest against the Glazers' ownership of the club, with anger reaching boiling point amid the club's involvement in the collapsed Super League proposal.

While the protest was mostly peaceful, some fans broke into Old Trafford to invade the pitch, while some caused criminal damage, creating a hostile environment around the stadium, and consequently, United's team bus never left the nearby Lowry Hotel.

Reacting to the demonstration, the club has now taken measures to bolster security around the stadium by installing new barriers, with more protests before the end of the season scheduled to go ahead as fans continue to make their voices heard.

Why United have changed their pre-match plans tonight

Quite what accommodation United have prepared for the players at the stadium is anyone’s guess at this stage. United used to have their pre-match meals at Old Trafford until the room was converted for hospitality purposes. With supporters still absent from the stadium, it’s possible the players have been allocated separate hospitality rooms before convening in the dressing room as kick-off looms. The Old Trafford dressing rooms are surprisingly small for a club of United’s size.

The MEN reported on Monday United were eschewing hotels before home games for the rest of the season following the May 2 protests at The Lowry, so the dummy run today was a waste of petrol if anyone had bothered to read up on matters. United were never going to risk another pre-match stay at The Lowry.

It’s probable United players drove straight to the ground, rather than via Carrington, due to their early arrival times. On Tuesday, United took two coaches from Carrington to Old Trafford and were followed in by two police vans.

Liverpool have surprisingly decided to stay at the same hotel they were holed up in 11 days ago. The risk of them taking a coach from Liverpool to Manchester for a late kick-off was they could have hit traffic, which is more congested now government restrictions in England have been lifted.
