Manchester United star Donny van de Beek has had a tough first season in the Premier League.

Manchester United have been told that Donny van de Beek should leave in the summer transfer window. Former Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has told the Red Devils star that the club are a step too far.

United star Van de Beek has been told he would be lucky to get in the starting line-up next season.

That is the verdict from Van der Vaart, who believes he cannot afford to sit out another year.

Van de Beek has played largely a sidelined role this campaign after signing from Ajax last summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has preferred Fred and Scott McTominay in a midfield pivot - and even if they are not available, other players have been utilised.

In fact, the Dutchman completed 90 minutes just three times in the Premier League.

And Van der Vaart has told his compatriot that his future is best served away from Ole Trafford.

“He fit perfectly into the Ajax system, but he doesn’t fit at Manchester United,” Van der Vaart told ESPN. “If nobody leaves United [this summer], he will be lucky to get in the starting line-up.

“He is far too good to sit on the bench for two seasons. He needs minutes very quickly. He is still young, but time flies.

A club like Borussia Dortmund would have been a better step for him. Manchester United might be a step too far for him.”

But he is not the only former Netherlands star who has told Van de Beek to ditch the Red Devils - with the legendary Marco van Basten also in the same boat.

He said last month: "It just shows what a great life they have when they play at Ajax. They all think very quickly that they are a big boy here and can make it in other countries, but in the Netherlands, there is a nice competition.

"In a team like Ajax you are really helped, especially in the number 10 position. Then you often see that they go abroad and it is a different story."
