Man Utd are interested in Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier and the 30-year-old could be a shrewd signing.

Residents in the village of Summerseat will soon realise that a major international tournament is upon them when a giant England flag appears in one of the local gardens.

The St George's flag flies proudly from a 20ft pole in the village near Bury and the wording across the middle - 'Trippier' - gives the game away.

Chris Trippier flies the flag for his son - physically and metaphorically - and with Trippier once again in an England squad for a major tournament it will be on display during Euro 2020.

There's plenty to be proud of for Kieran Trippier and his family at the moment. Another tournament with the Three Lions follows hot on the heels of becoming the first Englishman since David Beckham to win La Liga, achieving it with the more unfashionable Madrid.

Trippier is a key cog in Diego Simeone's team, but he could be tempted by a return to the North West and the chance to swap Madrid for Manchester, living closer to his family.

United see Trippier as someone who can provide competition at right-back and the 30-year-old - who hails from a family of United fans, despite starting his career with City - is an ideal complement to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The down to earth and engaging Trippier also fits the bill of recent United signings. Having initially focused his rebuild on youth, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tried to add a winning mentality to his squad in recent transfer windows. Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani arrived at Old Trafford with the experience of winning 29 major honours between them. That has sharpened the mentality inside the dressing room.

Trippier has had to wait for his own golden moment but he would now bring the experience of winning another league title, and a difficult one to win at that. This isn't a vintage La Liga but Atletico had to scrap to get over the line, with their full-back from Greater Manchester instrumental in back-to-back come-from-behind wins in the final two games of the season.

But he will also add more than a little competition in an area of Solskjaer's squad that has lacked any sense of selection jeopardy this season. Trippier may well be the more complete right-back between himself and Wan-Bissaka. Certainly, Gareth Southgate's continued England selections would give away his own feelings.

While Trippier can offer a greater attacking threat against deep defences, a particular problem for United at Old Trafford, he is in the same class as United's current incumbent defensively. You don't win the admiration and respect of Sean Dyche and Simeone if you're a full-back who can't defend. Trippier has credited with Dyche with helping to mould him into the footballer he became and he remains in contact with his former manager at Burnley.

While Wan-Bissaka has improved offensively at United he remains something of a weak link in the final third. His delivery has improved but his touch isn't always assured and teams often leave him in space on the right, preferring to focus their defensive energies on United's more dangerous attackers. Trippier would give United more of a cutting edge down the right and his crossing is consistently excellent.

A year ago United signed an attacking left-back in Alex Telles, someone who it was thought could offer a different dimension to Luke Shaw. Instead, Shaw transformed himself into one of the finest all-round left-backs in England and Telles has hardly had a look-in.

If United can complete a deal for Trippier then he will certainly lay down a substantial challenge for Wan-Bissaka. The £45million signing might benefit from the competition, but he will have a significant fight on his hands to retain his place.
