Manchester United admire Harry Kane and Erling Haaland ahead of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t ruled out signing a new striker despite Edinson Cavani staying for another year, according to reports. And that means the club could feasibly go after Harry Kane or Erling Haaland when the transfer window reopens. Both players are admired by the Red Devils having sparkled for Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Manchester United recently tied Cavani down to a new contract, with the striker saying at the time: “Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents.

“I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here.

“They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things.

“From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager. As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.

I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field.

I’ve not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and that is something that I cannot wait to do.”

In the time since, it’s been claimed United have cooled interest in Kane and Haaland.

But with the Daily Mail saying the Red Devils could yet sign a new striker, with Solskjaer open to the idea, it’s possible they’ll go back in for the duo.

Tottenham haven’t sold a single player to United since Dimitar Berbatov back in the summer transfer window of 2008, with the Bulgarian moving despite Manchester City offering more money.

But with Kane available for the right price, that may change.

United, during their glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson, would always try and sign the best players in the Premier League.

And Kane certainly falls into that bracket, with the 27-year-old establishing himself as one of the best players on the planet in recent years.

Manchester City currently appear to be frontrunners in the race to acquire the England international, especially in the wake of Sergio Aguero’s move to Barcelona.

But United aren’t entirely out of the equation, either, with the Red Devils having the huge finances required to strike  a transfer deal this summer.

Haaland is another player admired in the corridors at Old Trafford, despite rejecting the club back in the January transfer window of 2020.

Solskjaer had hoped to land his compatriot but Borussia Dortmund, after agreeing to meet Mino Raiola’s demands, swooped in instead.

Yet United have remained admirers of the Norway international in the time since, especially given his heroics for Dortmund this season.

Haaland scored 40 goals across all competitions for the Bundesliga side, helping them overcome a problematic campaign to qualify for the Champions League.

And United see him as their long-term No 9, even if their priority at the current moment in time appears to be his club team-mate Jadon Sancho.

Speaking after United’s recent Europa League final loss to Villarreal, Luke Chadwick warned the Red Devils against making the same mistakes of last summer when it came to additions.

“I think it’s imperative that someone comes in early, and a big-name signing as well,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside.

“Obviously there’s a huge disappointment from the fanbase after the defeat last night.

“I know Ole’s won a lot of the fans over, but there’s going to be huge pressure because it’s another trophyless season.

“I think you can appease fans a lot if a Kane, or a Haaland, or a Sancho came in in the next few weeks, just showing that they’re serious about strengthening and doing so quickly.

It was such a merry-go-round last summer, Sancho was kind of on and off, and then Telles and Cavani came in late doors, so I think it’s important that the planning around the off-season, the recruitment, is all in place and they’re ready to go early.”

Chadwick also acknowledged Liverpool’s speed at signing Ibrahima Konate, adding: “Liverpool’s season’s finished, whereas United only finished last night.

“Obviously Liverpool have moved quickly at the end of their season and now hopefully United can do the same.

“I wouldn’t say I’m massively disappointed, obviously he (Konate) is a talented boy, but I’m sure the planning has gone on at Man United after the criticism of how the last off-season went.

“I was very impressed with Pau Torres. Villarreal were very defensively sound. United have a lot of attacking threats but they didn’t really come to the fore last night, and that was down to the way Villarreal defended as a unit, and individuals.

“He looks a top defender and it will be interesting to see if United do go for him.”
