Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a tough decision on who to select as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper next season.

Former Manchester City and England goalkeeper Daniel James believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should select Dean Henderson as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper.

Solskjaer faces a crucial decision this summer between Henderson and David de Gea, with whoever he overlooks likely to seek a transfer in order to secure more regular first-team football.

Henderson was thrust into the first-choice role earlier this year when De Gea was absent due to paternity leave and seemingly became United 's de facto number one.

However, De Gea caught the eye with his Europa League performances, particularly in the second-leg of the semi-final against Roma, to reignite the debate again.

The Spaniard flattered to deceive in the final against Villarreal though, failing to save a single penalty of the 11 he faced in the shootout, and James believes it's time for a change.

“I would go Henderson, he's 23 (he's 24) and at Premier League level he's obviously shown that he can perform, with Sheffield United and also now on a number of occasions with Manchester United,” he told Goal.

“There's some getting used to playing for Manchester United, which is slightly different to playing for Sheffield United, but the capability that he's already got and the potential that he has is far greater than what David de Gea offers.

“De Gea isn't a bad goalkeeper, it's not about that. I just think from a manager's perspective, you're looking at where the club's going to go forward.

“De Gea has been phenomenal for Manchester United, but to stay performing at that level is so difficult. I think with the Dean Henderson there's an opportunity there for Manchester United to go forward.”

Henderson and De Gea are with England and Spain respectively ahead of the European Championship, which begins on Friday.
