Manchester United winger Tahith Chong joins Birmingham City on loan
Man Utd have confirmed that winger Tahith Chong will spend the season on loan with Birmingham City.
Manchester United winger Tahith Chong has joined Birmingham City on a season-long loan deal for the 2021/22 campaign.
The 21-year-old returned to pre-season training at Carrington last week but has now signed a deal to spend the season with the Blues in the Championship.
Chong will continue to train with United at the start of pre-season before making the move to the Midlands and linking up with Lee Bowyer's side.
After two loan moves overseas last season Chong is now committed to a season of football in the second tier and he's confident he will improve at St Andrew's.
“I’m excited to get started. Excited to get to know my new teammates and everyone at the club," he said.
“I spoke to the manager here and heard about the plans the club has for this season and for me as well.
“He spoke to me about some improvement points and I’m looking forward to working with him. I want to come here and become a better player and develop.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the Championship and to see what it brings.
“I’m a player who likes to get at players, like to dribble and beat players. I’m fast and I’ll try to bring that to the team.
“I’m looking forward to the season and to meet all the fans. I think I’m even more excited than they are."
Chong spent the start of last season on loan at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, making 15 appearances, before a January switch to Club Brugge in Belgium, where he made a further 10 appearances.
There was interest in him from clubs on the continent again this season but it was felt his development would benefit from a season in English football.
He's made 16 appearances for United, the last of which was in the second leg of the Europa League tie against LASK Linz in August 2020.
Chong currently has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option of a further year. He joined the club from Feyenoord in 2016 and won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 2019 and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award in 2019.
