Mason Greenwood explains why he chose the No.11 shirt at Manchester United

Man United youngster Mason Greenwood has detailed why he chose his squad number.

Mason Greenwood has revealed that being able to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs was why he chose the No.11 shirt.

Greenwood is still only a teenager but he has already established himself as one of United's finest attacking stars.

The academy graduate began to break into the team during the 2018/19 season and was handed his first start by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the final day of the season.

Greenwood wore the No.54 upon his introduction to the seniors but was promoted to the No.26 for the following season, in which he enjoyed a break-out campaign

The versatile forward bagged an impressive 18 goals in all competitions and was further rewarded for his progress as he then inherited the iconic No.11 shirt, which has been worn by the likes of Giggs, Andrey Kanchelskis, Mark Hughes and George Best.

Greenwood has revealed that he picked the shirt number himself and did so as he hopes to live up to the legends that have worn it before him.

“It’s a great and an iconic number at Manchester United. That’s one of the reasons why I picked it,” he told United's official site.

“I’m so proud to wear the shirt. Obviously, you’ve got so many players down the line, like Ryan Giggs who has worn it for many years.

“It’s a big ask to wear that shirt, following in the footsteps. It’s a challenge I’ll take on and hopefully do my best.”
