Mark Halsey feels VAR and Stuart Atwell got it right in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

Before ruling out Joel Matip’s goal in the second half, the referee, Stuart Attwell, went to the pitchside monitor.
Virgil van Dijk, a teammate of Matip’s at Liverpool, got in the way of Reece James while he was in an offside position.

They were correct rulings, but Chelsea had three goals disallowed because of offsides.

Taking a look at the Naby Keita challenge on Trevoh Chalobah – I thought Stuart Attwell played exceptionally well – if it had been a severe foul, VAR would have been called in and there would have been a replay.

If Stuart had seen it, I’m sure he’d have shown Keita the yellow card for making an unwarranted challenge. A review would have been strongly urged by VAR if they believed it was a red card offense.
Slowing down some of these challenges makes them look worse, but it’s just one of those things that happens on the football pitch. The VAR ruled that there wasn’t an apparent error because Stuart didn’t see it.
Even if fans will be dissatisfied, these issues typically appear worse when slowed down, and they must be appraised in real time.
