A senior Russian general has been killed in fierce combat in Ukraine, dealing a huge setback to Russia’s invasion.

Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, deputy commander of Russia’s Central Military District’s 41st Combined Arms Army, died yesterday when Ukrainian defense forces withstood the Russian onslaught.

According to a military source, he was murdered ‘by a sniper’ and that a funeral for the Major General – by far the most senior Russian figure to die in the conflict thus far – will take place in Russia on Saturday.

After days of denials, the Kremlin revealed Monday that 498 of its men were killed and 1,600 were injured in Ukraine’s’special military operation,’ but the exact toll is likely certainly greater.

Ukraine’s military today claimed that Russia’s troops had suffered 9,000 casualties – albeit the statement acknowledged that the death toll ‘is compounded by the high intensity of fighting’.
