Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek Man Utd return dates confirmed

Manchester United began their pre-season campaign on Sunday with a 2-1 victory at Derby County but were without a host of first-team stars including those who played in Euro 2020

Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek will all return to Manchester United ’s training in a week’s time.

Martial and van de Beek have missed the first two weeks of United’s training as both recover from injury setbacks sustained in the closing weeks of last season.

Martial sustained a knee injury on international duty with France on 28 March and did not play again that season while Dutch midfielder van de Beek was forced to withdraw from the Netherlands’ Euro squad.

Pogba - alongside Bruno Fernandes - have been afforded an extended break after featuring in the knockout stages of Euro 2020 for France and Portugal respectively.

French star Pogba is currently on holiday in Florida while Fernandes has spent his time off in his native Portugal as he rests and recuperates ahead of the new campaign.

Pogba was one of the stars of Euro 2020 but Didier Deschamps side’s elimination at the Round of 16 meant that he did not feature in the final three rounds of the competition.

The same is true for Fernandes, as Portugal lost out to Belgium at the same stage - although the 26-year-old only started in his side’s opening group games against Hungary and Germany, before featuring as a substitute in the following two games.

Fernandes was visibly tired during the tournament - following a gruelling campaign where he featured in 58 club matches, in which he started 51.

The two midfielders were among a host of players missing for United’s 2-1 victory at Derby on Sunday - the club’s first pre-season friendly.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then addressed return dates for those players who are yet to return to training as the club steps up its preparations for the new season.

Solskjaer explained when asked about the return dates of Martial and van de Beek: "They're not ready yet.

"They'll probably be 100 per cent training with us a week on Monday. They're still working hard to step into the group.

"Fernandes and Pogba? It won't be next week, no. The week after."

The quartet are unlikely to be involved against Brentford in a pre-season friendly on 28 July although a more realistic date could be the clash with Preston three days later.

United - who visit Queen’s Park Rangers in their next friendly on Saturday - will conclude their pre-season with a game against Everton on 7 August.

Solskjaer’s side will commence their Premier League campaign with a home game against Leeds on 14 August.

Marcus Rashford will not be in action until October due to undergoing should surgery while his England teammates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are still on holiday following their prolonged run in Euro 2020.

Edinson Cavani, Daniel James, Fred, Scott McTominay, David De Gea, Diogo Dalot and Victor Lindelof are yet to return to training following international participation this season - while Dean Henderson is recovering from an injury while Eric Bailly and Amad Diallo will represent Ivory Coast in this summer’s Olympics.
