Man Utd and Liverpool join Arsenal in transfer fight for cut-price Houssem Aouar
Midfielder Houssem Aouar looks set to leave Lyon this summer but Arsenal and Spurs now face competition from Man United and Liverpool in his signature as race hots up
Manchester United and Liverpool have reportedly joined the race for in-demand Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.
The 23-year-old looks set to leave the Ligue 1 club this summer and he has been a long-term transfer target for Arsenal and Tottenham.
The playmaker has two years remaining on his contract at Lyon but the French side look set to cash-in on him this summer and there are a host of English clubs monitoring the situation.
The Gunners were actively trying to sign the player last summer and have revived their interest this year but will face competition from Premier League rivals United, Liverpool and Spurs.
The details are outlined in a report from French outlet Le10Sport, with Lyon expecting to receive notifications of interest from the English quartet.
Spurs and Arsenal are the two frontrunners for the deal and are said to currently be operating behind the scenes to put the framework of a potential deal in place.
Both Mikel Arteta’s side and North London rivals Spurs are said to be in touch with the player’s entourage with both courting the player and hopeful that they will persuade him to select their club.
However, they have now reportedly been joined in the race by another two Premier League clubs who hold an active interest in Aouar.
Liverpool are said to have the Frenchman on their list of potential replacements for Georginio Wijnaldum, who left Anfield this summer as a free agent to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The Dutch international ace leaves a notable hole in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield and even though Curtis Jones is expected to play a greater role for the side next season after breaking into the first-team squad last campaign.
Liverpool’s relationship with Lyon is not at its strongest - the Reds and the Ligue 1 club have not been on the best of terms since the collapsed transfer of Nabil Fekir three years ago.
Manchester United are also said to hold an interest in Aouar as they believe that Paul Pogba leaving Old Trafford is a possibility amid his agent Mino Raiola contacting Paris Saint-Germain over a deal.
Pogba has just one year remaining on his contract at the Red Devils and there is the possibility that he could be sold this summer amid interest from the Parisians.
Aouar is said to be on a shortlist of potential replacements for the midfield star, and that is why United are also monitoring his situation - even if it is not at the stage of making a firm offer.
